Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates who wish to be considered for
admission into the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The sandwich programme is an intensive career-oriented master’s programme tailored towards
busy media, communication, and allied professionals who seek to upgrade themselves. The
programme shall be held over two (2) sandwich semesters of 8-weeks, (June-July) per semester.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
DIPLOMA IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES
REGULAR AND WEEKEND SESSIONS
SSSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including
English and Mathematics, and two (2) elective subjects, with an overall aggregate of 20 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects,
including English and Mathematics, and two (2) elective subjects, with an overall aggregate of 30 or
better.
MATURE STUDENTS
Persons wishing to apply as mature students must not be less than 25 years of age by September
2018.
Applicants must also satisfy the following minimum requirements:
i. Credit Passes (A1 – C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in five (5) subjects comprising three
core subjects, including English Language and Core Mathematics, plus two (2) elective
subjects.
ii. Applicants whose qualifications do not meet the requirements for admission as in (i) above may
be considered for admission on passing a special entrance examination conducted by the
Institute. Applicants should note that those who meet the requirements for admission as in (i)
above will not be required to take the entrance examination.
SSSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes (A- D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including
English and Mathematics, and three (3) elective subjects, with an overall aggregate of 24 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects,
including English and Mathematics, and three (3) elective subjects, with an overall aggregate of 36 or
better.
NOTE:
Applicants will be selected based on a competitive cut-off point for the year.
Candidates awaiting results are eligible to apply.
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. GIJ Diploma holders with a minimum Final Grade Point Average of 2.50 or
    Grade B or an equivalent diploma from an accredited communication training
    institution with an average of Grade B are eligible to apply.
  2. Diploma holders with Final Grade Point Average of 3.25 from the following
    disciplines: Archival Studies, Public Administration, Social Administration,
    Education, and Management Studies are eligible to apply.
  3. Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower
    Division) in the following: Marketing, Information Technology, Secretaryship, and
    Management Studies as well as Social Science and Humanities-related
    programmes not mentioned here are also eligible to apply.
  4. Degree holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower Division) in the following:
    Information Studies, Information Technology, Sociology, Psychology, Political
    Science, Social Studies, Theatre Studies, Marketing, Secretaryship, English,
    and French are eligible to apply.
  5. Final Year Diploma students are eligible to apply as awaiting-results
    applicants. (Certificates should, however, be provided to complete the
    application process)
    i. A Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from the Ghana Institute of Journalism or any
    accredited/recognized university, with at least Second-Class Lower Division.
    Or
    A Bachelor’s degree in other disciplines from any reputable university with at least Second-Class Lower
    Division.
    ii. Passing an entrance examination and selection interview.
    NOTE: Applicants from Non-English speaking countries must also have a minimum level of English
    Language Proficiency in the following: GSCE/O LEVEL, IELTS and TOEFL.
    INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
    International students who hold equivalent qualifications are eligible to apply for any of the
    programmes.

    HOW TO APPLY: There are two types of applications.

    a. Pay your application fee at any Fidelity Bank Branch by providing your name (as will appear
    on your application) and telephone number.
    b. You will be provided with your application number at the bank.
    c. Go to http://registration.gij.edu.gh/apply/start to begin and complete your application online.
    Note: you will need a valid email address to complete the online application.
  7. Application Form
    a. You can also download application form from the Institute’s website, www.gij.edu.gh, and
    complete them manually.
    b. Pay the appropriate application fee at any Fidelity Bank Branch and attach pay-in slip from
    the bank to the completed application form and submit.
