Admissions for University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) starts in the first quarter of the year therefore applicants are advised to make all their documents and requirements ready before admission begins.

General Information For All Undergraduate Applicants

How to Apply (Undergraduate Applicants)
The University announces to the general public about the sales of admission forms for Degree and Non Degree programmes. Sale of Admission forms is open to the general public from January and ends in August this year. The cost of Admission forms for Ghanaian Applicants ONLY is:

  1. BSc Programmes is  GHC¢200.00
  2. Diploma Programmes is GHC¢175
  3. Certificate Programmes is GHC¢150.00 

 The Cost of Application for International Applicants is US$100

Ghanaians are to purchase the online admission e-vouchers from any branch of the following Institutions:

  1. Access Bank
  2. Zenith Bank
  3. Fidelity Bank
  4. CalBank
  5. GCB Bank and
  6. Post Offices

All foreign applicants are to logon to https://admissions.umat.edu.gh/international-applicants/admission-code-request.html to request for the registration LOGIN DETAILS to register.

Applicants are required to purchase and submit one set of application form only. Any applicant who submits more than one set of forms shall be disqualified. Any form that is not fully completed at the time of submission shall not be considered.

The closing date for submission of completed application forms with relevant documents is 31st July.

NOTE:

Applicants who have already submitted their applications and awaiting their WASSCE results MUST update their applications with their results not later than 31st July.

The University admits applicants from all races and nationalities, irrespective of their religious, cultural, social or ethnic persuasions. There is no minimum age limit for admission to any of the approved programmes of study of the University. All candidates with the General Certificate of Education ‘A’ Level, West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) usually take 8 semesters (4 years) duration to complete the programme.

GHANAIAN APPLICANTS

BSC PROGRAMMES

Applicants must have at least credits in the following subjects English LanguageMathematicsIntegrated Science/Core SciencePhysicsChemistry and Elective Mathematics for the various programmes.

Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology

NOTE: Only Geomatic Engineering applicants can substitute Chemistry for Geography

Faculty of Engineering

BSc Mechanical Engineering
Applicants must have at least credits in the following subjects; English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science/Core Science, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry/Technical Drawing/Metal Work

BSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Applicants must have at least credits in the following subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science/Core Science, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry/Applied Electricity/Electronics.

BSc Renewable Energy Engineering
Applicants must have at least credits in the following subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science/Core Science, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry/Applied Electricity/Electronics.

BSc Computer Science and Engineering
Applicants must have at least credits in the following subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science/Core Science, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry/Applied Electricity/Electronics/ICT/Computer Studies.

BSc Mathematics
Applicants must have at least credits in the following subjects; English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science/Core Science, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Grade Aggregate System for WASSCE and SSSCE Holders
UMaT uses the WASSCE Grading Systems for the selection of candidates. Aggregate 36 is the minimum entry aggregate into all programmes. The following table shows this Grading System and the SSSCE equivalent grades.

Applicants with Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates

Applicants must have GCE Ordinary Level Certificate or its equivalent with credits in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and GCE Advanced Level Certificate with passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME
Diploma Programme in General Drilling
This is a two year (4-semester) programme run by the Department of Geological Engineering. The programme aims at addressing the needs of middle-level personnel in drilling for mineral/oil exploration, geotechnical and hydrogeological establishments. The successful candidate should be competent to take up jobs in the mining, oil, hydrogeological and allied industries and be able to design, operate, work in a team and supervise drilling operations under all conditions as well as have knowledge in using modern drilling equipment.

An applicant must satisfy any of the following:

  1. SSCE Holders: Six Passes (A-D) in all subjects which are English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Physics, Elective Mathematics, Chemistry or Metal Work or Technical Drawing or Applied Electricity or Applied Electronics.
  2. WASSCE Holders:
    a. Passes (A1-D7) in English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
    b. Must posses a minimum of C6 in the following subjects: Physics, Elective Mathematics, Chemistry or Metal Work or Technical Drawing or Applied Electricity or Applied Electronics.
  3. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level credits in five (5) subjects including English language, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics; and General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level passes in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
  4. GCE Ordinary Level Certificate with credits or SSCE with Passes in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus experince in the relevant area of study.
  5. City and Guilds of London Institute Part III Certificate or its equivalent in either Mechanical, Automobile, or Electrical Engineering.
  6. Holders of Certificate of Proficiency in General Drilling (one year course) from University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa or a recognised institution are eligible.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES

  1. Applicants with SSS Five passes (A-E) in all subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science.
  2. Applicants with WASS Certificate Five passes (AD7) in all subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science.
  3. Applicants with Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates Candidates must have FIVE passes in all subjects of GCE O Level including English Language, Mathematics and Science.

NOTE: These are weekend (Saturday and Sunday) programmes.

Mature Applicants
Applicants should be at least 25 years of age and should have SSS or GCE ‘O’ Level Certificate with credits in Five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics and the relevant Science subjects plus experience in the relevant area of study in addition to passing an Entrance Examination and/ or an interview. Mature applicants must also possess birth certificates that are, at least, five (5) years old after the date of issue.

Fee-Paying Applicants
Applicants who satisfy UMaT’s minimum entry requirement of aggregate 36 but cannot meet the competitive departmental cut-off aggregate can apply for admission as Fee-Paying students provided they have sponsorship to cover their fees throughout their study at UMaT. All fee paying applicants must select “Fee-Paying” option on their Application Forms.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

International applicants from accredited/recognised institutions with equivalent qualifications will be considered for admission. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL PROGRAMMES

BSc and Diploma Programmes

Generally, International candidates must have at least credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and two (2) other relevant subjects.

GCE /IGCSE O’Level and A’Level
Applicants under this category must have credits in the following O’Level and A’Level subjects:

  1. O’Level – Five (5) credits including English Language, Mathematics and three other relevant subjects
  2. A’Level – Credits in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
Applicants with international Baccaleureate (Science and Technical) are eligible to apply. Such applicants must also possess a proficiency certificate in English. Please note that all certificates should be translated into English. Equivalences with regard to the certificates would be sought at the National Accreditation Board.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN ENGLISH
The Certificate Programme in English is a two-semester programme aimed at providing knowledge in English for Foreign applicants with the English Language skills necessary to follow a university-level course with English as the medium of instruction.

There are two (2) admissions for this programme. 

  1. First Admission – Classes start from September and end in May.
  2. Second Admission – Classes start from January and end in May (Intensive).

Candidate who pass the UMaT Certificate Programme in English will be eligible to apply for admission into the UMaT Diploma and Degree programmes.
