University of Ghana Launches 20 for ‘20 Campaign

Prof. Andrews Anthony Adjei, Coordinator, Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Teams, has on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Senior Management, launched the University of Ghana’s 20 for ’20 Fundraising campaign, an initiative which seeks to mobilize funds in support of four (4) major projects namely The UG Endowment Fund, Museum Fundraising, Construction of a Pediatric Unit and Refurbishment of the Emergency Unit at the Legon Hospital.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Adjei, who chaired the ceremony, noted that the UG 20 for ’20 Fundraising Campaign is an initiative of the Office of Institutional Advancement aimed at raising a minimum of 20 million Dollars in 2020. Donors will be encouraged to donate any amount in multiples of GHC/USD 20.00 to the Fund on the 20th day of every month (20, 200, 2000) to support the four (4) UG projects outlined above.

Prof. Adjei further disclosed that the University’s strategic vision puts forward four critical areas of research to focus and promote international collaboration in research initiatives; to increase output in areas of Malaria research, Trans-Disciplinary research into Climate Change Adaptation, Enhancing Food Production and Processing, Development Policy and Poverty Monitoring and Evaluation. He added that these research initiatives require enhanced fund raising efforts, hence the need to boost the University’s fundraising endowment to achieve successful outcomes.

In brief remarks, Prof. Robert Ebo Hinson, Acting Director of the Institutional Advancement Office indicated that the target of US$100 million is to provide non-restricted monies to promote research, infrastructure, teaching equipment, as well as improve faculty, staff and student life on campus. He noted that an amount of US$1,285,625 is needed for the construction of a Pediatric Unit at UG Hospital and US$122, 000 to kick start the refurbishment of an Emergency Unit at the Hospital.

Prof. Hinson was optimistic that the achievement of the said target will help fulfil the University’s vision to become a world class research intensive university in the next couple of years. He encouraged all stakeholders to come on board in the spirit of unity and oneness to achieve the aim for the betterment of the University and Ghana at large.

To set the pace, Prof. Hinson donated an amount of Two Thousand Dollars (US$ 2,000.00) towards the fund raising exercise. He disclosed that the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship will also be making a donation in January.

Mrs. Christy Badu, Head of Alumni Relations Office and Acting Director of Academic Affairs in brief remarks, expressed immense gratitude to Prof. Robert Ebo Hinson for the great work done and encouraged Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Students and Friends of the University to emulate the example of Prof. Hinson and other benefactors to contribute their quota to enable the University achieve the target.

Other officials who witnessed the launch were Prof. Olivia Anku-Tsede, Legal Counsel; Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, Director of Public Affairs Dr. Ibrahim Bedi; Director, Internal Audit and Dr. Mahmoud A. Mahmoud, Senior Lecturer, Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, University of Ghana Business School. Also present were Mrs. Mavis Osafo Adu, Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs; Ms. Adwoa Abrokwa, Assistant Registrar, Alumni Relations Office; a representative of the SRC, Mr. Daniel Osei Wereko, SRC PRO; Staff of the Institutional Advancement Office, Alumni Relations Office and the University of Ghana Business School.

The University of Ghana Endowment Fund was setup in May 2018. It was launched on Tuesday May 8, 2018 at the UG Great Hall by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic. The President, a proud alumnus of the University described the initiative as an excellent initiative and noted that Endowment Funds constitute the fulcrum around which most world-class universities in the world operate.
