UHAS & Yonsei University Hold Workshop on Public Health Education and Capacity Development

University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho – Ghana (UHAS) hosted a day’s workshop on Public Health Education and Capacity Development. The workshop which was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, was organized in partnership with Yonsei University – Korea, the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Ministry of Education – Ghana with the support of Ghana Health Service.

The workshop was organised under the theme ‘Stakeholders Workshop on Public Health Education and Capacity Development of University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ghana’ and the workshop aimed at creating a development strategy for UHAS curriculum which is capable of producing ‘fit for purpose’ Health Professionals. In his welcome address, Professor Gyapong said the partnership was imperative for the development of UHAS. He added that the workshop will also create opportunities for research collaborations between Yonsei University and UHAS. According to him, the partnership between the two Universities will facilitate development in UHAS through Staff and Student exchange, Technology Transfer and other areas of mutual benefit .

On the part of Yonsei University, Professor Emeritus Dr. Seung-Hum Yu who was excited about the Vocational Training and other community engagement programmes of UHAS, called for the creation of more opportunities for UHAS students to practice more on the field. In his view, this will be a great step to eliminate or prevent prevalent diseases as health practitioners as well as students will become familiar with the health issues in their community.

Among the participants were Professor Francis Zotor (Director of International Programmes, UHAS), Dr. Amanda Jimin Kim (Project Management Office -Yonsei University), Dr. Timothy Letsa (Director of Ghana Health Service, Volta Region), Professor So Yoon Kim (Doctor of Medicine and Public Health, Yonsei University), Professor Harry Tagbor (Dean, School of Medicine – UHAS), Professor Prudence Nyaledzigbor (Dean, School of Nursing and Midwifery – UHAS) and Dr. Margaret Kweku (Dean, School of Public Health) .

Other participants and Stakeholders were Nurses, Health workers, Health Directors from various Municipalities and Districts of the Volta Region.
