Central University College Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Programmes

Students will be afforded adequate opportunities to gain practical exposure in all areas of Pharmacy practice throughout the period of their training (i.e. practice-based programme).

This programme, has therefore, been developed in consultation with practitioners from all areas of pharmacy and emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, patient-focused content and experiential opportunities across the breadth of practice.

Pharmacy is a profession whose practitioners must possess integrity  which must be reflected in all aspects of their work and formal dealings with others.  This high sense of responsible character and attitude shall be inculcated in the students.  The desirability of displaying these qualities in their dealings with peers, members of academic staff, patients or healthcare professionals with whom they come into contact shall be impressed upon the students at all times during their training.

Pharmacy education, all over the world is changing to meet the expectations of both health professionals and the public.  The Pharmacy programme needs to create a challenging academic environment that builds leaders in patient-centered care (as opposed to drug-centered care), through an emphasis on the theory and use of evidence-based learning in order to equip Pharmacy graduates to adequately inform health policy and management issues in institution, community and regulatory settings.  This will prepare the new Pharmacy graduate to become a generalist practitioner of Pharmacy.

The goals and objectives of the programme will embrace the scope of contemporary practice responsibilities as well as emerging roles that ensure the rational use of medicine in the individualized care of patients and in patient populations.

The programme will provide students with a core of knowledge in relevant basic sciences and research methods, medication, preparation, distribution and administration of drugs and integrated body systems management.  It will also provide skills, abilities, attitudes and values including communication skills, critical thinking, social interaction, pharmacotherapy, decision-making, professionalism and ethics that are necessary for the provision of pharmaceutical care.  The need for life-long learning will be reflected as an integral theme of the programme.
